In Harbaugh’s introductory press conference after he was named the new Los Angeles Chargers head coach, the 60-year-old described his excitement by drawing a comparison to Morgan Freeman’s character in the film, Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding. Get really good at football and attack it each day, like (Chargers president of football operations) John (Spanos) said. But now the new Chargers head coach wants another shot at the big time. “I said this the other day, but I’ve only got so many sands left in the hourglass, and I want another shot,” said the new the Chargers head coach. That’s what’s going to motivate it, that’s what’s going to drive it.

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Joe Hortiz is going from assembling talent for John Harbaugh to leading the football operations with Jim Harbaugh. Hortiz has agreed to terms to become the Los Angeles Chargers general manager, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. He started as an area scout in 1998 and has been the Ravens director of player personnel for seven seasons. New York Giants assistant GM Brandon Brown was the only other candidate to get a second interview. The other candidates interviewed were interim GM JoJo Wooden, Chicago Bears assistant GM Ian Cunningham, Buffalo Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray, New Orleans Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland, Indianapolis Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds, Chicago co-director of player personnel Jeff King and NFL chief football administrative officer Dawn Aponte.

When Jim Harbaugh took a pay cut from Michigan after the 2020 season, getting another chance to be an NFL head coach seemed like a long shot for him. If Nick Saban had retired after the 2022 season it’s doubtful Kalen DeBoer would have been his replacement at Alabama. He leaves Michigan after three straight seasons of beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten and reaching the playoff. Harbaugh has been a head coach in college and the NFL for 20 years, including a three-year stint with FCS San Diego before landing the Stanford job in 2007. “I knew this was a thing that, not that I had to do, but that I really wanted to do.

He will be the first former Chargers player to return to the team as head coach. The Chargers are the fourth of eight teams to fill their head coach job, following New England, Las Vegas and Tennessee. Manuel may promote Sherrone Moore to replace Harbaugh after the offensive coordinator filled in for him during the final three games of the regular season. Herbert will be playing for his fourth head coach and possibly fourth offensive coordinator in five seasons. Harbaugh became a first-time head coach at the University of San Diego in 2004 and left after three seasons to start a four-year run at Stanford.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders hired Tom Telesco on Tuesday as their next general manager, passing over interim Champ Kelly for the position. Kelly could remain as the assistant general manager, the position he held under Dave Ziegler, who was fired Oct. 31. Kelly then was given the interim title and was believed to be a strong candidate to get the job full time. Telesco, 51, comes from the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers, where he was the general manager since 2013. Las Vegas also could stay put and perhaps select Washington's Michael Penix Jr. if he's still on the draft board.

With 1:47 remaining and the score tied at 38-all against the Chargers on Sunday, the Detroit Lions coach went for it on fourth-and-2 from the Los Angeles 26-yard line. A field goal would have given Justin Herbert and the Chargers a chance to win or send the game to overtime. Goff then kneeled down three times, Riley Patterson kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired, and the Lions prevailed in a 41-38 shootout over the Chargers. Goff responded by leading the Lions (7-2) on a nine-play, 53-yard drive, culminating in Patterson's kick. It was the Lions' longest touchdown run since Jahvid Best went 88 yards in 2011.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Robert Saleh raised some eyebrows a few weeks ago when he declared the New York Jets have “embarrassed” some of the NFL's top quarterbacks this season. “So whether it's a Super Bowl defending (champion) quarterback, an MVP quarterback or a first-year starting quarterback, we're going to treat them the same way. “Our goal is to be leading in turnovers on defense and obviously a great defense knows how to score or set up scores," Mosley said. The impressive numbers on defense are in stark contrast to those being put up by Wilson and the offense. The Jets rank 31st in overall offense, 30th in both scoring and passing and last in third-down percentage and red-zone conversion percentage.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles host Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings in their home opener in prime time for the second straight season. Philadelphia overpowered the Vikings on both sides of the ball in a convincing 24-7 victory on Monday night in Week 2 last season. Hurts threw for 333 yards, the offense racked up 486 yards and the defense held Minnesota to 264 yards. The Patriots (0-1) stifled Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia’s dynamic offense and would’ve won if the offense wasn’t inept. Against spread: 0-1.

CNN —Week 1 of the new NFL season is in books and there are no shortage of talking points. This year’s influx of rookies made their first steps in the NFL over the weekend with varying success. Most notably was the serious-looking injury suffered by Aaron Rodgers on his New York Jets debut on Monday Night Football. It is the second serious injury Dobbins has suffered in his short NFL career after he tore his ACL, ruling him out of the 2021 season entirely. Matt Durisko/APAlso, can Zach Wilson – who was relegated to the Jets’ bench after Rodgers’ arrival – maintain a playoff push?

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in the NFL on Thursday, agreeing to a five-year, $275 million contract extension, according to a person familiar with the deal. The market for quarterbacks was set for Burrow in late July when Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert agreed to a five-year, $262.5 million extension. Herbert’s total value and $52.5 million average per season surpassed the $260 million, five-year extension ($52 million average) that Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson signed in April. Deshaun Watson agreed to a fully guaranteed $230 million deal with Cleveland in 2022. Bengals owner Mike Brown said a year ago that the team had begun restructuring finances in order secure a long-term deal for Burrow.

Opinion | The Economic Case for Taxing Star Athletes
  + stars: | 2023-07-31 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
OK, it’s time for another round of “Are Star Athletes Overpaid?” I hope to bring some economic theory to bear on this well-worn question. As usual, which side you take will say a lot more about you than it says about the star athletes. It’s never a bad time to argue over athletes’ pay, but now is a particularly good one. The supply of star athletes is extremely limited, so they can demand a high price for their (nonessential) services. (Unless you’re dying of thirst in the desert, in which case you would give a pocketful of diamonds for a single glass of water.)
